Why Vegan Snacks?

Some people find changing to a vegan diet a bit daunting to begin with.

A good way to make the transition a bit easier is to stock up on plenty of vegan snacks. This way you will always have something quick and easy, which is readily available, whenever you feel hungry.

So while you are getting to grips with going vegan and figuring out what you can and can't eat, you can still enjoy the snacks and treats you are used to, in between your main meals.

A lot of people mistakenly believe that vegan diets are dull and boring. That couldn't be further from the truth, whether it be snacks or main meals, there are plenty of both tasty and nutritious options.

For example healthy snack options include dried fruit, nuts, rice crackers, wholegrain crackers and nut butters such as peanut and almond butter. And of course there is always fresh fruit and veges and there are plenty of ways to add variety and mix things up a little bit...

Sprinkling cinnamon over fresh fruit such as apples not only adds great flavor, it adds great health benefits as well. Did you know that cinnamon regulates blood sugar levels, reduces cholesterol levels and boosts your metabolism? It also contains fiber, iron, calcium and manganese.

A simple way to add both extra taste and nutrition to fresh veges, is to dip pieces into hummus. Carrot sticks, broccoli, cauliflower... in fact just about anything, tastes nice with hummus.

Hummus is full of healthy ingredients such as chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, garlic and lemon. Hummus is loaded with nutrients including iron, vitamin B6, copper, manganese, folic acid and amino acids. The amino acids found in hummus help you get good quality sleep and uplift your mood.

Hummus also contains plenty of Omega 3, which is great for both brain and heart health. Hummus is a fantastic and versatile dip and is also great in sandwhiches, wraps and spread on crackers.

Vegan snack bars are another great addition to your pantry. Most are full of healthy ingredients and are substantial enough to stave off those hunger pangs for ages. They are great for gym goers and anyone who leads a busy and active lifestyle. It's a good idea to keep a few of these in your car glove box or in your handbag for emergencies.

As well as healthy snacks, everyone deserves a treat sometimes. There are many fantastic vegan chocolates and cookies to choose from these days. And while these are more of a treat and are high in calories, many of them do contain health benefits as well.

Vegan chocolates, especially the very dark ones, are full of health benefits.

Did you know that eating dark chocolate several times a week can help lower your blood pressure, increase blood flow to your brain and help control blood sugar levels?

It is also full of antioxidants which can protect you from many types of cancer and slow the signs of aging. Dark chocolate is also high in potassium, copper, magnesium and iron. When choosing dark chocolate 85% or higher is best.

As you can see, just from the snack examples above, a vegan diet can be far from boring.
